The 2024 Grant Burge Pro-Am Golf Classic

The highlight of the Norfolk Island golf year is undoubtedly the annual Grant Burge Pro-Am Golf Classic, held each August. A full and fun week of golf that includes daily social functions and the opportunity to play with a professional golfer, ‘the Classic’ consistently boasts a full field of both local and overseas competitors.
There are two sections to the tournament – professionals & amateurs. The professionals play a 72 hole stroke event for $17,500, while the amateurs play a 72 hole stroke / stableford event for over $13,500 worth of prizes. Most of the daily and overall prizes for the amateurs are based on stableford, however there are a few major overall gross prizes to help keep the Classic’s tradition as the club’s major event. In addition, six jackets are awarded to the winners of specific sections of the tournament. Each jacket is represented by a the different colour logo – they are:

Saturday night is the welcome evening at Castaway Hotel. The tournament is officially opened with a current club champion of NIGC, a previous winner of the Classic, a life member of NIGC and a sponsor of the Classic hitting a ceremonial opening tee shot at the same time. Players pick up their player’s bags at the club, check the draw and register their attendance for the week. Last year’s defending champions of the jackets are introduced and have their jacket presented to them.
On Sunday, practice rounds are open to all until 12.30pm, but the golfing week really kicks off around 3pm with the BC Excavations Professional Knockout. This exhibition event gives everyone the chance to watch the professionals in action on the course. There is also an amateur section run in conjunction with the knockout.
Monday – Thursday are the four rounds of the tournament. Following the golf, there are daily presentations held in the clubhouse in the evenings – in true Norfolk Island party style. There is also the Pro-Am Calcutta which is held on Tuesday night following the presentation. This is a terrific evening of entertainment where you can bid on your choice of professional or group of amateurs. The Thursday night is also consistently the biggest night in the clubhouse for the week with a great time guaranteed.
Friday night is the overall presentation night which is held at the Norfolk RSL Club. Generally around 200 people attend this evening. A two-course dinner is included with your entry as we celebrate the winners of the week. This will include the presentation of the sought after jackets, with last year’s winners presenting them to the new winners.
